Fourth of July

This is going to be a very strange 4th of July for those of us in central Texas. Due to the drought, there is a ban on the sale and use of fireworks in most counties. The annual grand displays by many cities have been canceled, which is such a shame, regardless of the necessity. Everybody loves fireworks! New Braunfels has taken the fire ban even further – no grilling in Landa Park. Can you imagine! Dozens of families, hundreds of people who have made barbequeing in Landa Park a holiday tradition cannot do so today. Perhaps for Labor Day either, depending on the weather.

These measures seem so odd, since last year we were having record rains, the aquifer was above normal, and smells of grilling were everywhere. (Heck, we had a major flood here June 9th of last year.) At least, they cannot ban us from bbqing in our own backyards. We’re having hot dogs and sausage this afternoon.

However, one fireworks stand owner pointed out that cigarettes cause fires, as well, and nobody is banning their use. True. The world is a smoker’s ashtray. Butts are all over sidewalks, parks, golf courses, beaches, parking lots, and along the sides of roads. Several wildfires have begun with tossed butts. Pathetic, disgusting, inconsiderate, harmful, and deadly habit…Happy Fourth of July!
