Okay, okay, okay – so perhaps I’m fighting a losing battle, but I have to try…Yesterday I told you about the tomato plant moat. Well, here is an update…I went to Lowe’s and bought some 14′ x 14′ bird netting, along with more stakes.
The netting was as unfriendly to work with as Christmas lights, so Danny helped me spread it out and over the stakes. The crazy stuff caught on everything, so it wasn’t a perfectly even distribution. I tied it all over the place, but there were some gaps at the bottom. No problem. Birds wouldn’t go under the net. HAH! A few hours later, I looked outside to see that several birds had done exactly that. Of all the nerve! I opened the patio door and they began to flee, although one panicked and took a little longer to find an escape route. Since I had used only one of the two packages of netting, I opened the second and completely surrounded the pool, tying it to the other netting and securing it to the ground with an assortment of pots. So there, you greedy flyers!
However, I may have painted myself into a proverbial corner. Though proud of my thwarting endeavors, I have to admit, it will no longer be easy to retrieve the ripe tomatoes. Do you think birds laugh?
I don’t know if birds laugh but it certainly made me chuckle. I feel your pain, between the gophers, squirrels, blue jays & raccoons just about everything i have planted has been either eaten or dug up. As a life long vegetarian I don’t eat animals but if I ever caught one of them I’d be sorely tempted to make an exception!

I know birds and critters are just trying to survive, but we humans are striving for beautiful surroundings and healthy foods. Despite bird feeders full of seeds, ears of dried corn and shelled peanuts for squirrels, and pieces of stale bread for all, I’m rewarded with stealth and deviousness!

Critters can make you crazy. Each year my tomato plants are raided by chipmunks and squirrels. The birds may not get your crop but as you said it may be a little difficult for you to get the tomatoes as well. Good luck.
