You have to see “Bernie”! It is hilarious, despite being about a real murder. It stars Jack Black as mortician Bernie Tiede, Shirley MacLane as rich Mrs. Marjorie Nugent, Matthew McConaughey as District Attorney Danny Buck, and a bunch of actual residents of Carthage, Texas, who will crack you up.

Back in the 1990s Tiede moved to Carthage, a small town in east Texas, and instantly became an asset to the community and a most competent and  compassionate assistant funeral director. He sang tenor in the church choir, directed and starred in local theatre events, helped everyone in need, and befriended practically everyone he met. To say that he was kind and liked, even loved, by everyone, except Buck, is a huge understatement. He was generous, mild-mannered, caring, and could not say “no” to anyone. Then along came Marjorie Nugent, a mean-hearted widow, despised by everyone, but Bernie managed to make her smile. They began to spend a lot of time, and her money, together, but after a couple years she thought she owned the poor man…Well, suffice it to say that the real Mr. Tiede is still incarcerated in Beeville, TX.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
