Wellllll, we forked over some money to see this flimsy sci-fi film, written and directed by Rian Johnson, then we walked out before it was over. Really lousy! Poor Bruce Willis (Old Joe), Emily Blount(Sara), Jeff Daniels(Abe), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt(Joe). How can you get interested in a movie when the characters have no last names or depth? Gordon-Levitt went through hours of makeup to look like a younger Bruce Willis, but he just comes off as being not himself.
There does not seem to be anything good happening in 2044, where Joe lives, does drugs, and kills for bars of silver. Who does he kill? People, like Old Joe, who the mob doesn’t like and sends back from 2072, where China is the best place to live. Although time travel has been outlawed by 2072, the mob, of course, uses a secret time capsule to get rid of undesirables. They arrive at a designated time and place with their faces covered and the loopers shoot them instantly and dispose of the bodies.
Abe comes from the future, as well, but is in charge of the assassins and runs a brothel/bar for them. If the loopers screw up, they are maimed or killed. If it is time to retire them, they wind up killing their future selves and are given gold bars as compensation.
We left just after Sara came into play. She lives on a farm, is caring for a boy who may grow into a guy with super powers in the future, and wields a shotgun against Joe, who is on the run against Abe’s guys…That was about all of the non-excitement we could take.
